Martin McConnell

Chief Executive Officer

Structured Finance, Property and Asset based Finance

Qualifications: Bachelor of Business

Martin has over 25 years in Banking and Advisory services. He gained initial experience in one of Australia’s trading banks before moving to sales management roles with several local and International banks including Challenge Bank, Citibank and Kleinwort Benson. In 1995 he assisted with the establishment of Capital Finance (Bank of Scotland subsidiary) in Australia. Over the next thirteen years Martin either set up and/or managed businesses in Equipment Finance, Vendor Finance and Structured Finance. In 2008 he joined the independent advisory firm of Grant Samuel as a Director advising on Property and Finance transactions. In February 2011 he joined Assetinsure as Head of Financial Risk Products. Martin was appointed CEO on 1st January 2021.

A positive and persevering attitude together with sincerity and honesty will produce the desired results.

Hamish Lilly

Chief Financial Officer

Finance and Administration

Qualifications: B Com, Member Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia and New Zealand


Hamish has more than 25 years accounting and finance experience. Hamish spent 10 years in chartered accounting working in Australia, New Zealand and the United States before moving into industry. Since then he has held a number of senior finance roles in companies in the manufacturing and distribution as well as insurance sectors.

Andrew Calvert

Head of Surety


Qualifications: Bachelor of Commerce

Andrew has over 25 years of experience in commercial banking, sales and marketing, insurance and administration. He joined ANZ Banking Group Limited in 1985 where he held various positions in the company before moving on to work for Thomas Cook as a FX (currency) dealer.

In 1995, Andrew joined AP Surety in Auckland where he established their New Zealand operations as Head of Surety up until 2000. In 2000, Andrew joined QBE Insurance (Australia) Limited – Sydney as Relationship Manager reporting to the Group General Manager Credit and Surety. In 2006 Andrew was appointed Head of Surety, Asia, Australia and New Zealand, QBE Insurance (Australia) Limited. In November 2008, Andrew joined Assetinsure as Head of Surety.

My philosophy is that life is all about learning and growing, and that life can be a real adventure of learning, growing, compassion, and joyfulness.

Something you didn’t know:
Andrew’s grandfather played for the ALL Blacks at No 8 and he has identical triplet brothers

Damian Gorman

Chief Credit Officer

Credit and portfolio management, deal structuring, asset based finance.

Qualifications: Bachelor of Economics Member of Institute of Chartered Accountants Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors

Damian has over his career had a broad range of experience in senior management and executive roles in Australia and abroad.

Following completion of an economics degree, Damian joined Price Waterhouse in 1986 completing his professional qualifications as a Chartered Accountant in 1987. He led teams in Sydney and Toronto Canada
undertaking audit and business performance reviews for major corporate customers across a range of industry sectors. Damian joined Westpac in 1995 as a senior credit executive with responsibility for developing and
improving the level of reporting to the Bank’s Executive Committee, Board and external parties. As Director, Westpac Institutional Bank, Damian successfully lead teams responsible for researching and developing credit
and marketing strategies for existing and prospective customers.

Damian joined Capital Finance in 2003 with responsibility for the Asset Finance (AFD) book which included structuring deals, setting risk appetite and portfolio management. He was promoted to the AFD Executive and had general management responsibility for national risk and operational functions. To broaden his executive capability Damian graduated from the Australian Institute of Company Directors in 2006 and completed an executive management program at London Business School in July 2009.

Damian joined Assetinsure as Group – Head of Credit in 2012.

David Southwell

Chief Risk Officer


David is a seasoned finance and risk professional with decades of financial services experience.

His skills revolve around driving change in business processes that establish ongoing compliance while managing the overall risk profile of the group. David has held both executive and board positions and is both a Chartered Accountant and a member of the Governance Institute.

Thane Duffin

Thane has over 25 years in insurance experience. He joined the Lombard Group of Companies in 2001. He headed up the trade credit insurance and surety business for Lombard Insurance Company Ltd in South Africa. In March 2021, Thane joined Assetinsure as Head of Strategic Alliances.

Nicola Dress

After starting her professional career with an apprenticeship as a shipbroker and completing her Masters in Law in 1999, Nicola has been working as a marine broker for more than 8 years both in Germany and Australia. She joined Assetinsure in 2007 where she uses her portfolio management skills as the national manager of the agency division.

Nicola’s first contact with insurance was a claim she lodged for her car that she lost to the Baltic Sea.

Susan Vidler

National Manager, Claims

Diploma of Loss Adjusting (ANZIIF)

Sue has been in the insurance & reinsurance industry since 1982. Prior to joining Assetinsure in November 2003, Sue spent 18 years in inwards reinsurance underwriting, outwards reinsurance buying, portfolio management and administration roles. This was followed by 3 years in Workers’ Compensation as the Manager of a National Accounts Department for a major writer.

Sue has served on the National Board of the Australian Insurance Law Association and was its President from 2014-2016. In addition, Sue was a member of the Industry Working Party established by the ICA to participate in the 2014 and 2020 review of the General Insurance Code of Practice.

Something you didn’t know:
Sue is a passionate Sydney Swans supporter, and holds fitness as one of her a core values. She enjoys skiing and does interval training on a regular basis.

Tim Spicer

Head of Motor Manufacturer Business

Wholesale Insurance for Automotive Manufacturers and Financiers.

Qualifications: Bachelor of Science Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia

Over the past 25 years, Tim has worked primarily in actuarial roles, first in New Zealand and then in Australia when he moved to Sydney in 2004.

Tim has worked in both corporate and consulting roles, in the public and private sectors and has been exposed to most classes of insurance during his actuarial career.

While employed by Ernst & Young, Tim was the Appointed Actuary (AA) to Assetinsure between 2006 and 2010.

Tim relocated to Melbourne in 2015 and was Appointed Actuary to an automotive add-on insurer for almost 5 years. This experience included all the usual AA duties plus extensive involvement in premium rating (particularly in trying to introduce risk-rated pricing), ASIC remediation and the Hayne Royal Commission of Inquiry. In April 2020 Tim joined Assetinsure with a view to a bit of a career change and to creating a new wholesale market for automotive insurances.

Wholesale automotive products include Manufacturer’s Warranty, GAP and Guaranteed Future Value.

Tim works out of our Melbourne Office in Wheelers Hill.

Mark Sinfield

Head of Builders Warranty & Domestic Building Insurance (DBI)


Corporate finance, credit and portfolio management

Qualifications: Bachelor of Accounting


Mark has spent most of his career working in corporate and institutional banking, first with an international bank followed by a decade at Westpac Institutional Bank. His roles were predominantly centred within corporate finance, management, credit and sales.

He joined Assetinsure in 2016 working as a Senior Relationship Manager in Assetinsure’s Surety business and was soon promoted to Product Director / Business Development Manager of the Mining Rehabilitation business. In May 2021 Mark joined the Domestic Building Insurance business and took over leadership soon after.


Donny Gouveia – Alternate Director

In the early part of his career Donny worked in the construction and engineering field for a multinational construction group.  During this time Donny led the finance function as Group Financial Officer and was the Deputy Chief Executive Officer at the time he joined Lombard Insurance Company Limited.

Over the next 4 years, Donny co-led Lombard’s guarantee division, sub-Saharan Africa’s largest insurance guarantee provider, specialising in the construction, mining and logistics industries.

In 2017 Donny relocated to Sweden to head up the group’s Nordic operations and was appointed as Chief Executive Officer of Nordic Guarantee in 2018. Nordic Guarantee is a specialist surety and guarantee insurance company operating in Sweden, Norway, Finland and Denmark. The company specialises in the construction, mining and travel industries.

Donny is a Chartered Accountant – CA (SA) and holds a BCompt. Honours in Accounting Science.

Julie Osborne – Non-Executive Director and Chair of the Board

Extensive experience across a range of sectors including in excess of 25 years in financial services. Julie holds academic qualifications in Economics and Law from the University of Sydney.  She currently serves on the boards of Auto & General Insurance Company Limited, NSW Crown Holiday Parks Land Manager, Police Bank Limited, and the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research.

In her executive career, Julie was an Executive Director at Westpac Banking Corporation where she led the Structured Finance business within the Treasury Division and served on various Westpac Group subsidiary companies in Australia and the United States. Julie chairs the Assetinsure Board Audit and Compliance Committee and as well as the Board Group Investment Committee.

Martin McConnell – Director

Martin is Assetinsure’s Chief Executive Officer, appointed 1st January 2021.

Steven Rankine – Non-Executive Director

Steve has over 20 years of extensive experience in global specialised funds management and financial institutions, Steve has a strong track record in building debt/structured finance businesses.  Steve also is an experienced executive Director of large private Infrastructure Corporations. 

He holds a Bachelor of Economics from Sydney University, a Graduate of AICD, and is a Fellow of both FINSIA and a Fellow of Australian Institute of Chartered Accountants.

Johnny Symmonds – Non-Executive Director

Johnny has more than 20 years of financial institution experience and was the CEO of Lombard for 11 years. He moved to head Lombard’s International Bonding division in July 2017, managing the group’s global bonding strategy.

He is a Chartered Accountant – CA (SA) – and holds a BComm. (Hons).

Peter Wedgwood – Non-Executive Director

After 7 years with the Hawker Aerospace Group Peter established Asset Underwriting in 1983 to specialise in Financial Risk insurance.  Over the next 35 years Peter has pioneered a number of financial risk products into the Australian and global markets. In 2003, Peter orchestrated the acquisition of Gerling Re Australia by Assetinsure Holdings (in which Peter was the founding shareholder). 

After 10 years as CEO of Assetinsure Group, Peter transferred to become an Executive Director on the Assetinsure Board for the next 7 years. Peter is a qualified Chartered Accountant.

Catherine Dubé - Non-Executive Director

Catherine is an Actuary with over 25 years’ experience in financial services. From 2012 to 2019 Catherine was Chief Risk Officer at AIG where she led the development and execution of the risk management strategy for the Australasian region.

Catherine currently serves as a Non-Executive Director for Guild Group and its subsidiaries Guild Insurance, Guild Link and Gold Cross (Chair Audit and RiskCommittees) and for Challenger Retirement and Investment Services (Chair Audit Committee). She also serves on the ACT Public Trustee and Guardian Investment Board and on the Sacré Coeur School Board.

Catherine holds a Bachelor of Mathematics and is a Fellow of the Actuaries Institute, a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries and a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Cathy Bellenger - Non-Executive Director

Cathy has more than 25 years experience in change, transformation, brand building consulting and advice to corporates and government, leading significant programs of brand repositioning, transformation and compliance/remediation. 

She has a proven record in delivering business growth and sustainability, understanding business drivers and motivating organisations to deliver in digital and regulatory complexity within a competitive landscape. She serves on Advisory Boards for Women In Media and EncompaaS (information management software).

Cathy holds a Bachelor of Business and a Masters of Business (International Marketing) from UTS and is a graduate of AICD.

Cathy joined the Board in 2021.
