She said the company’s arrival signified that the negative phase in Australia’s insurance industry was over, and that Assetinsure would introduce welcome capacity to areas where it was most needed, especially in professional indemnity. As well as professional indemnity the company will focus on corporate insurance including directors & officers liability, property, construction and financial risk insurance. Senator Coonan, whose responsibilities include APRA – Australian Prudential Regulation Authority - said that Assetinsure’s debut vindicated the tough decisions Government had made on regulating the insurance industry. Senator Coonan was introduced at the launch to a packed audience of insurance industry luminaries by Assetinsure Chairman Mr John Fahey, past Premier of NSW and former Federal Minister of Finance. Assetinsure CEO, Mr Peter Wedgwood, said Assetinsure was the first privately owned Australian company to make its debut since the eighties. With assets of more than $280 million and shareholders’ funds of about $70 million, the company had a strong base from which to expand. Mr Wedgwood said that in bringing important capacity to the market, Assetinsure would allow brokers to reduce their frequent travel to London, as additional choice is now available in Sydney.
